People from Sukabumi and most part of West Java in general are very religious, 97% of the total population in this region are Muslim. This means they heavily practice Islamic traditions, lots of mosques can be found in the area where prayers can be heard 5 times a day. They also keep the dress code accordingly, wearing short clothes is inappropriate to them so this should be respected.

Sukabumi is a lively city with lots of traffic. People usually use motorbikes to get to their destinations but there is also public transportation, the ANGkutan KOTa (=city transportation) which is the so called “Angkot” among Indonesians.  These cars look like minivans or minibuses with eye catching color such as blue, red, or green. Every Angkot has their own route, to distinguish by letter or number code, or line color on the side. The route usually posted on windshield, example like ‘Malengkeri-Cendrawasih-Makassar Mall’ means that Angkot will go through those 3 places on their route.

Inside there is one passenger seat (or two for bigger car) beside the driver. At back, there are two 2 seats, 4 on the left and for 6 passengers on the right side. Some Angkot also has near the back door. It doesn’t matter if you want to ride Angkot and you ask other passengers to shift so you can sit, as we know that Indonesian people are friendly.

Angkots can stop everywhere depends on passenger’s destination. To stop just say kiri, which means ‘left’ because in Indonesia we ride on the left side. This situation makes some traffic jam, moreover if Angkot stop for a long time to take more passengers. Sometimes it takes 10 or even 30 minutes depends on how many passengers the driver wants to find. Usually we pay around IDR 3.000 – IDR 5.000, depends on their local regulations. Angkot is the best way to go everywhere when many streets are crowded by private cars in big cities today. Angkot helps to reduce fuel use because they take people with different destinations in one way. It is very helpful in saving environment from global warming and you can also get closer and know more about local people this way. angkot-in-terminal

Warung is a place that really popular in Indonesia, it is a small and simple kiosk or stall which is managed by a family as a business. If you want to travel in Indonesia and eat cheap, you should definitely try a warung instead of a restaurant. These usually sell rice and other kind of Indonesian dishes, so you can choose which one you want to eat. It is always nice to eat at a warung so you can mingle with local people.

Warung also means small shop which sells anything you need in your daily life such as soap, instant coffee, sewing kit, even stationary. Usually it is a family’s small business and they open up the warung in the porch of their private home. The open hours depends on their activity, usually it opens in the morning until midnight.
